Home Remedies

I’ve been pretty sick-y this winter (flu, colds, migraines… boo), which made me want to turn to home remedies for a more natural way to deal with my symptoms.
I’ve found that cough syrup never works very well, so I was very happy to find a recipe for a homemade cough syrup that totally works. I just got over a cold, and my cough went away after only 2 days of taking this concoction:

1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
¼ tsp cayenne pepper
¼ tsp ground ginger
1 tsp honey
2 tbsp water

After taking 2 tsp of the mixture, I also sucked on a couple of wedges of lemon to help soothe my throat, loosen congestion and give me puckered sexy lips (I wish). I also drank a lot of ginger tea with honey and lemon, which is both yummy and soothingly effective!

Early this week, I also made myself some “Get Better” soup, based on Tara Stiles’ recipes for “Never Get Sick” soup, using rice noodles, spinach, bell pepper, and a lot of grated ginger and lemon. A big bowl of noodle soup (mmm, noodle soup) is so good on a cold day, whether you’re sick or not!

Apart from trying to deal with my cold, I’ve also been drinking a lot more ginger tea and snacking on candied ginger to ease the pain of headaches/migraines. Again, the ginger helps as an anti-inflammatory and also helps with any nausea I may be experiencing. Yes, I’m still taking my meds (Relpax is my saviour!) but I’m crossing my fingers that one day I won’t need them any more.

What home remedies do you turn to?
